The skeptic's confusion:

Yes.

"And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven." Luke 21:11

No.

"Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them." Jeremiah 10:2

Explanation:

There are different ways of looking at the sky. There is a way to look to try forecasting the weather, just as there is a way to admire the sun and clouds during the day, and the moon and stars at night. Nothing about these observations are sinful, they are natural inclinations.

In another way, the word “signs” can be used with varying meanings. For example, a sign can indicate a physical, elevated board on a street, or it can be used synonimously with “symptom” in the field of medicine. Therefore, signs can have two different meanings in the verses above-- and they do.

The way to differentiate between the two is to look at the word “heathen” in the latter verse from Jeremiah. If the heathen are not simply looking up at the sky, what else are they doing? They are looking to the stars, the “heavens”, to try to predict the future. Astrology is what it is called, and that pseudo-science is expressly forbidden by the Bible. (Isaiah 47:13-14) When the practitioners of astrology look at the night sky, they are watching for positions of stars in a constellation.

Contrarily, when Jesus Christ returns, which is what the passage in Luke is referring to, their will be dramatic and cataclysmic movements in the sun and stars(likely meteors), and the high heavens will change to a blood red- which will color the moon.

It is okay to look at the sky for a prolonged period of time if there are drastic changes in it; people want to avoid danger. However, using the sky as a way to predict signs of the future purely based on star positioning is wrong and very wicked.

"And Jacob called unto his sons, and said, Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you that which shall befall you in the last days... Dan shall judge his people, as one of the tribes of Israel. Dan shall be a serpent by the way, an adder in the path, that biteth the horse heels, so that his rider shall fall backward. I have waited for thy salvation, O LORD." Genesis 49: 1, 16-18
