The skeptic's confusion:

Yes, it is possible to fall from grace.

"For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame." Hebrews 6:4-6

"For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them." 2 Peter 2:20-21

No, it is not possible to fall from grace.

"And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand." John 10:28

"For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord." Romans 8:38-39

Solution:

It is possible to fall from grace. In John 10:28, Jesus says that He will give His followers eternal life. If they continue in the way and guidelines of that life, “they shall never perish”, and no one will be able to take away that salvation-- which requires an active faith on the part of the believer.

Likewise, Apostle Paul in Romans 8 addresses all the different threats to the Christian, yet none will be able rob them of their faith. All the things in his list which threaten the Christian are other beings, objects, and present/future events. All of these are outside the believer; nothing in the external world can separate the Christian from the love and security of Jesus Christ.

Nevertheless, if a Christian decides from within that he/she doesn’t want to follow Christ anymore, but rather wants to become an apostate, he/she can lose his/her salvation.

The relation of the believer to Jesus is a very sacred covenant. This covenant requires that the two people(the Christian and Christ) in contract be actively involved in the agreement. The covenant can be broken, but not without severe consequences: eternal damnation. For this reason, we should pray to God that our hearts do not become hardened-- that we keep on the straight and narrow path.

Only through ourselves can we be in danger of losing our relationship with, and thereby our salvation through, Jesus Christ.

"And Jacob called unto his sons, and said, Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you that which shall befall you in the last days... Dan shall judge his people, as one of the tribes of Israel. Dan shall be a serpent by the way, an adder in the path, that biteth the horse heels, so that his rider shall fall backward. I have waited for thy salvation, O LORD." Genesis 49: 1, 16-18
