The skeptic's confusion:

We should follow our heart and eyes.

"Walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes." Ecclesiastes 11:9

We should not follow our heart and eyes.

"Seek not after your own heart and your own eyes." Numbers 15:39

Explanation:

Let us first quote all of Ecclesiastes 11:9:

“Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.” (italics mine)

Solomon is basically saying, “If you can follow your heart without sinning, go ahead.” However, since every man is exceedingly sinful, just as the Israelites in Numbers, our hearts cannot be trusted. As Jeremiah 17:9 says:

“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”

In that case, we need help from God to manage our lives in a way pleasing to Him. Only by the transforming power of Holy Ghost, and by the corresponding sanctification brought by Jesus Christ, can we trust our hearts to do good. Only with Jesus living in us, and through us, can we lead our lives honorably from the heart.

"And Jacob called unto his sons, and said, Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you that which shall befall you in the last days... Dan shall judge his people, as one of the tribes of Israel. Dan shall be a serpent by the way, an adder in the path, that biteth the horse heels, so that his rider shall fall backward. I have waited for thy salvation, O LORD." Genesis 49: 1, 16-18
