Explanation:

Once again, Matthew Henry says it best:

“Luke now gives the genealogies of Jesus. Matthew’s genealogy is of Joseph’s ancestors and this one of Mary, mother of Jesus, in David’s line through Nathan. Matthew goes no higher than Abraham, but Luke brings it as high as Adam. Matthew designed to show that Christ was the son of Abraham, and heir to the throne of David. Luke, designing to show that Christ was the seed of the woman, that should break the serpent’s head(Genesis 3:15), begins with Heli, who was not the father of Joseph, but of the virgin Mary.”

"And Jacob called unto his sons, and said, Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you that which shall befall you in the last days... Dan shall judge his people, as one of the tribes of Israel. Dan shall be a serpent by the way, an adder in the path, that biteth the horse heels, so that his rider shall fall backward. I have waited for thy salvation, O LORD." Genesis 49: 1, 16-18
