Once again, Matthew Henry says it best:
“Luke now gives the genealogies of Jesus. Matthew’s genealogy is of Joseph’s ancestors and this one of
Mary, mother of Jesus, in David’s line through Nathan. Matthew goes no higher than Abraham, but Luke brings it as high
as Adam. Matthew designed to show that Christ was the son of Abraham, and heir to the throne of David. Luke, designing to
show that Christ was the seed of the woman, that should break the serpent’s head(Genesis 3:15), begins with Heli, who
was not the father of Joseph, but of the virgin Mary.”
