The skeptic's confusion:
|
 |
|
The righteous will flourish.
"The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon." Psalm 92:12
The righteous will perish.
"The righteous perisheth, and no man layeth it to heart." Isaiah 57:1
____________________________________________________
Explanation:
The righteous (Christians, and those under the Old Covenant who believed in the promise of a Messiah) shall flourish in that
they will receive everlasting life through the purification of their souls. Some of them may die cruel or senseless deaths,
but the righteous’ eternity will compensate them. The Psalmist is referring to the sanctification that takes place
in a believer through the Holy Ghost.
The Isaiah passage is, of course, taken out of context by the skeptic. Here is what the commentator Matthew Henry states
on chapter 57:
“The prophet had condemned the watchmen for their ignorance and sottishness; here he shows the general stupidity and
senselessness of the people. The providence of God removed good men out of their world. The careless world slights these
providences. Little children, when they are little, least lament the death of their parents, because they know not what a
loss it is to them.” (commentary on Isaiah 57:1)

"And Jacob called unto his sons, and said, Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you that which shall befall you in
the last days... Dan shall judge his people, as one of the tribes of Israel. Dan shall be a serpent by the way, an adder
in the path, that biteth the horse heels, so that his rider shall fall backward. I have waited for thy salvation, O LORD."
Genesis 49: 1, 16-18
